Organist Database WELS: 2R1.3

Welcome to the Organist's Database: WELS application program.    This program, after installed on an IBM PC compatible computer, will give you instant access to all your music indexed by Christian Worship hymn numbers.  Upon entering the hymn numbers, the program  will select the list of music books and page numbers corresponding to the tune title of the entered hymn number.   To terminate the program, either click on the EXIT button or enter a blank for the hymn number.   This will queue the print file to your default printer.

The following window snaps will walk through how to access the different features:

The preceding window comes  up the first time you execute the program.   Check the "I ACCEPT"  button and click the "Continue" button to bring up the following screen.

This window is asking for your name, address, Email address and phone number.   This information will be encrypted and sent attached to any music indexes you create and sent to me for inclusion into the organist database (see below).    This information will allow me to contact you if I have any questions, and to include your name in the list of contributors.    If you never submit any music indexes, this information will never leave your computer.

This Organ Database program will create 3 subdirectories on your C drive. One is under "Program Files", which will contain the actual program and database.  One is called "OrganDB", which will contain your personal book information.  The last, "ODBupdate", will be created when you choose to download a new version of the database program.

Clicking "Continue" again will take you to the main menu.    This is the main menu window and will be the window that always comes up first.

The top line indicates that this is the Organist Database version 2R1.3.   The 2R1 indicates the  version of the software.    The .3 indicates the level of the database.   As more books are added or as corrections are made to the existing database, the new database will be made available on the ODB website.   You will be able to inquire, download and install the new database files automatically if your computer has internet access.   In addition, when an update is made to the application program itself, it can be downloaded automatically and placed in a file on your computer for you to install.

The "Mybooks" button will bring up the mybooks window, which will allow you to choose the books you have, thus only your books will be searched.

The "EasyEntry" button will bring up the EasyEntry window, which will allow you to enter into the database books which you have which are not in the database.

The "Utilities" button will bring up the Utilities window.   This window allows the program to check for database and application program updates.   It also allows you to upload your indexed books for inclusion into the standard database.

The "Help" button will bring up the Help window.    This document is the help text for ODB WELS and can be viewed through this window.

The "Tune Select" button will bring up the Tune Select window.   In addition to selecting tunes through the main menu by entering hymns from, Christian Worship, this will bring up all the hymn titles and hymn tunes in the database for selection.  Just double click on the hymn title or tune title to select music based on the tune of the hymn or the tune itself.   The database also contains the tunes from, The Lutheran Hymnal.

Finally, the "Exit" button will terminate the program. If any hymns or tunes were selected and the "Output to file box" was not selected, the print file will be printed on the default printer.

The "All Books" check box will be checked until you have selected your books from the books in the database.   You can always check this box to see what music is available for a particular tune or hymn.

The "Output to File" check box can be checked if you want your output to go to the file "C:\ODBOUTPUT.TXT" instead of the default printer.   Once one tune or hymn is selected,  the check box disappears.   You can only create a file or print during one execution of the program.  This checkbox also controls where the output is sent from the "Book Content" Window.

Finally, the hymn text entry box is where you type the hymn number.   See the example below.

In this example, the hymn number 456 was typed in and the "Enter" key pressed.   The program listed the hymn and tune title and queued for print all the music based on the tune LAKEWOOD since the "All Books" check box was checked.   The database (2R1.3) contained only one selection that matched this tune.   The printout follows.

----------------------------------------------------
Hymn: 456 FORTH IN YOUR NAME, O LORD, I GO
Tune: LAKEWOOD
----Number Volume Book
8     30 CONCORDIA HYMN PRELUDE SERIES
                  __HERBERT GOTSCH
----------------------------------------------------

If more hymn numbers were entered, the corresponding selections would have printed right after the first.  This will continue until you click the "Exit"  button on the top right corner of the window.

The Mybooks window description follows:

This window allows you to select your books.   In so doing, only selections from the checked books will be printed.   The list is in alphabetical order, with the book names starting with numbers first.  NOTE: Book titles spelling out the number (ie., nine), were converted to the numerical symbol (9).    The program is set up to remember your book selections across multiple executions of the program and across database and program updates.   As you acquire more books, just click the "Mybooks" button and update the list.    When you have completed your selection, click the "exit" button to return to the main window.    Notice that the "All Books" check box is now unchecked.

The "Print my books" button will list your books either to your printer or to a file, if the "output to file" checkbox is checked.   This listing will also include any books you entered via the EasyEntry  window.   The "Print all books" will print all the books in the database.

Clicking the Book Table of contents button will bring up the following screen.

Selecting any book in the collection will display the contents of each book as entered in the database.   If you have corrections to any table of contents, please send them to me at the email address listed below.

The EasyEntry window description follows:

This EasyEntry window allows you to enter books you own which are not in our database.  When complete, a file will be placed in the OrganDB subdirectory, which will be searched along with the normal database.  If you have a number of books entered that are not in the released DataBase, please send them to me via the Utilities page upload link.  The books will then included in the next version of the database.

Easy Entry asks for the name of the book, the author, the volume, and any book or ISBN number.  Once entered, the EasyEntry window will appear as above.    These 4 pieces of information will be the top 4 lines of the file. Next, if the music pieces are numbered, then click the "increment" box.  This will allow automatic incrementation of the number box and will speed entry.  If they are not numbered, then enter the page number of each piece as you enter the title.   To enter a music selection, simply start typing the tune or hymn title.  The left window will search for the entry as you type.  When it highlights the correct title, hit "enter."  The cursor will then go to the page box where you will enter either the page number or the music piece number.   Hit "enter" when you have entered the number.   This entry will then appear in the right pane.   If the program finds no match, enter the complete title.  The tune index (the second number in the pane) will be zero.    If an entry is inserted incorrectly, just double click on it and it will disappear.   You cannot do this to the first 4 entries.   If there is an error in these four lines, just hit "omit" and start over.  Once complete, click "save" and this book will be searched along with the rest of the books in the database.   See below on how you can send this book information to me for inclusion in the database.

The Utilities window is discussed below:

The "Check for database and program...." button will connect your computer to the internet through your provider and check for database and program updates.    If there is just a database update available, click on the "update database" button.  The program will automatically update the database and the help text.    Check the "help text" button (on the main window) for information on the update.    If there is a program upgrade available, click the button to download the new program installation files. These will be downloaded to the C:\odbupdate subdirectory.   A help screen will appear guiding you through the upgrade.

The "Transmit my music..." button will package all of the book indexes you created via EasyEntry, along with your personal information.  It will then encrypt it,  and send it via your internet connection to the "www.wels.us/odb" website.  Upon successful completion of the upload, an "Upload Complete" message will appear.   If it does not, your files were not sent to me.

NOTE:  If you have a firewall like "Zone Alarm", you make sure it will allow you to FTP files to the ODB website.   For "Zone Alarm", you must set the internet zone security to medium and the trusted zone security to medium before you transmit

The "Update..." button will bring up the screen with your personal data for editing.

The following is a discussion of the Tune Select window:
